An IRCC Application Is Pending—What Happens When Life Changes?

A new passport, a move or a family change can happen while an application waits. How does IRCC’s update process account for life continuing?

Applications capture a moment in someone’s life. Processing takes place while that life continues. What happens when the information in the file no longer describes the present?

Which changes does IRCC identify?

IRCC’s update instructions cover changes such as marriage, separation, a new child, a new passport and circumstances affecting eligibility. Contact information has its own instructions. The relevant route depends on the kind of change and the application.

Does every update appear in the account?

Not necessarily. IRCC explains that updates submitted through its process may not be visible in the online account. A document specifically requested by the department can also have a different submission route from an unsolicited update.

Why can a new passport raise another question?

An eTA is linked to a passport. IRCC states that a new passport requires a new eTA. That example shows how an ordinary life event can interact differently with an application, a status document and a travel authorization.
