PR Application Submitted—Has Your Temporary Status Been Extended?

A permanent residence application is in progress. Does that change the deadline on temporary status? IRCC treats these as separate questions.

A permanent residence application has been submitted. The confirmation arrives, the wait begins—and an existing temporary status deadline keeps approaching. Has the application changed that deadline?

What does IRCC say about the wait?

IRCC’s Help Centre explains that a person can remain in Canada while awaiting permanent residence as long as they maintain legal status. Temporary resident status is time-limited; the PR processing period does not replace that requirement.

Why are these two different questions?

A pending PR application concerns a future decision. Temporary status concerns the person’s present authorization to be in Canada. Evidence that the first file is being processed does not, by itself, answer the second question.

Does “submitted” tell the whole story?

No. It describes a step in an application, rather than a universal extension of every applicant’s current status. That distinction is why a general story about waiting for PR cannot establish someone else’s position.

Transfigured Immigration explores questions like these through individual consultations, with the person’s actual documents and circumstances as the starting point.
