Express Entry 2026: New Categories and Updated Experience Rules
Canada updated its Express Entry category priorities for 2026, creating new opportunities for some candidates while full program, ranking and documentation requirements continue to apply.
On February 18, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the categories it will prioritize through category-based Express Entry invitation rounds.
New categories include medical doctors, researchers and senior managers with qualifying Canadian work experience, candidates in eligible transport occupations, and certain skilled foreign military recruits with a Canadian Armed Forces job offer.
IRCC also renewed categories for French-language proficiency and eligible occupations in health care and social services, education, STEM and trades. For the renewed occupation-based categories, the required eligible work experience increased from six months to one year within the previous three years.
What category-based selection does—and does not—mean
A category-based round does not replace the normal Express Entry requirements. A candidate must first qualify for at least one Express Entry-managed program, enter the pool and satisfy the instructions issued for the particular invitation round.
Belonging to a priority category does not guarantee an invitation to apply. CRS score, ranking, work history, language results and the details of each round still matter.

Confirm that the NOC code accurately reflects the duties performed.
Document qualifying work experience carefully.
Keep language results and the Express Entry profile current.
Review the instructions for each invitation round before relying on a category.
