Visitor Extension or Restoration: Why Can One Date Change the Question?
A visa expiry date and the end of an authorized stay are not always the same. Why do extension and restoration involve different questions?
Two visitors want more time in Canada. One still holds valid status; the other has lost it. A difference in timing can change the nature of the immigration question.
Which expiry date is involved?
A visitor visa concerns travel to Canada. The authorized period of stay is a different matter, reflected in the applicable entry decision or status document. The dates are not automatically identical.
How does extension differ from restoration?
IRCC describes extension as a request made before status expires. A timely application can lead to maintained status while a decision is pending. Restoration concerns a prior loss of status and has separate eligibility conditions and time limits.
Does filing restore status immediately?
A restoration application does not itself restore status or create maintained status. A visitor record also does not function as a visa or guarantee re-entry.
These distinctions explain why “staying longer” is not one uniform process, even when the purpose of the visit looks similar.
For individual questions, private consultations with Transfigured Immigration provide a separate setting for discussing a person’s circumstances.
