The Same Degree, a Different Canadian Equivalent? Inside the ECA

A diploma’s title and its Canadian equivalency can differ. What does an Educational Credential Assessment actually establish for Express Entry?

A credential may have a familiar name in one country but a different Canadian equivalent. For Express Entry, that difference can matter more than the title printed on the diploma.

What does an ECA establish?

IRCC describes an Educational Credential Assessment as an assessment of a foreign credential’s validity and Canadian equivalency. An immigration-purpose assessment may be relevant to program eligibility or foreign-education points.

Why do provider and date matter?

IRCC designates assessment organizations and professional bodies, with occupation-specific instructions in certain cases. Its Express Entry guidance also requires an ECA to be less than five years old at both profile completion and permanent-residence application submission.

Does equivalency also mean professional recognition?

An immigration assessment does not itself guarantee a job or a licence to practise. Professional licensing can involve additional requirements. Academic equivalency, immigration points and permission to work in a regulated profession therefore answer different questions.

For individual questions, private consultations with Transfigured Immigration provide a separate setting for discussing a person’s circumstances.
